AGIAINST GENTRIFICATION

AGAINST GENTRIFICATION

Talking about gentrification a few years ago seemed like an eccentricity or an academic tongue twister. Now this term is part of the mainstream and we even dare to say that it is part of popular culture. It is a term that is already widespread and identified to a greater or lesser extent. However, to date the phenomenon is still not fully understood as it is often simplified by the hypsterization of the neighborhoods.

But beyond this simplistic topic, this phenomenon tells us about a more serious and deeper process than involving the expulsion of its inhabitants as a consequence of a purely speculative process. This implies a violation of the right to the city, since neoliberal rules are imposed in favor of the interests of some in the face of others by purely mercantilist codes. The right to live in a territory, in the community and social fabric that has been built up over the years is broken when the market bursts in with its capricious swings. The role of the institution that should protect that right, however, is often the opposite and is an accomplice of speculative interests by unprotected by their inanition and lack of public policies to reverse this situation.
