UP THE ONES FROM BELOW

This project, made in collaboration with Caldo de Cultivo colective, aims to promote the discussion on the gentrification process faced by La Perseverancia, a popular neighborhood located in the center of Bogotá. One of the frequent mechanisms in the gentrification process is the elimination of the memory of the neighborhoods, in order to annul the feeling of belonging to the territory, thus facilitating the expulsion and replacement of its inhabitants.

The memory of La Perseverancia is clearly rooted in a working class identity. Its history is closely linked to the Bavaria brewery and Jorge Eliecer Gaitán, a popular liberal leader assassinated when he was running for president, giving rise to El Bogotazo, the riots and the looting of the Colombian capital in 1948. Gaitán called La Perseverancia "the Red Belt" of Bogotá. Forgetting their history of struggle and breaking their rebellious memory is the first step in weakening community ties and their possibility of collective action.
